Girl Gang x City of Makers have teamed up to bring you a month long exhibition to show the responses to #SeeMySelfie.
What is #SeeMySelfie?
Are selfies a powerful space in which women can reclaim and celebrate their own image? Or symptomatic of the narcissism of 21st century culture? Do they allow women to publicly exude self confidence and explore their identity creatively? Or do they reinforcing the idea that a woman’s image is her most powerful asset? #SeeMySelfie is a project run by Girl Gang Manchester and Girl Gang Sheffield. It was a month long social experiment exploring self portraiture, self representation and self-acceptance. Over 250 women from Sheffield and Manchester took part sharing their stories, artwork and photographs on many social media platforms. Each day provocations were given and people answered in whatever way they felt right and wrote about their experiences.
This body of work connected people of different ages, races, sexualities, with widely varying experiences. It shows strength in being vulnerable. Point of view experiences from people living with disabilities, mental illnesses, different backgrounds and different ideas. It shows we are all different but can al feel the same. It is 250 POV’s no one ideology or agenda just a huge snapshot of what it is to be a female and a female online at this point in time. It is up to the audience to draw conclusions to the questions proposed.
